If you’ve never been to a Goodwill Outlet store — or didn’t even know we had one in Boston — you’re not alone. Tucked away behind our Harrison Avenue retail store is a thrifter’s dream: rows of bins filled with everything from clothing to housewares, ready to be discovered at unbeatable prices.

Unlike our traditional stores, the Outlet is a fast-paced, dig-deep kind of experience — and it helps to know a few things before you go.

What to Expect

Shopping at the Outlet isn’t your typical retail experience. Items are sorted into large rolling bins and rotated throughout the day. Shoppers can dig through as much or as little as they like. While the inventory may look chaotic at first glance, seasoned thrifters know the treasures are in there — you just have to hunt for them.

Pricing is straightforward:

  • Books/Media:

    $1.00 per item

  • Clothing/Accessories:

    $1.75 per item

  • Coats:

    $3.00

  • Shoes:

    $3.50

There are no fitting rooms and no returns, so it’s important to inspect items carefully before purchasing.

Every item pulled from the bins is a chance to reduce waste, extend a product’s life, and — in true Goodwill fashion — support programs that help individuals with barriers to self-sufficiency achieve independence and dignity through work.

Outlet Rules & Etiquette

There are a few ground rules that help keep things running smoothly:

  • No touching the bins until all are in place during a rotation.
  • Do not run or push when new bins come out.
  • Do not take items from another shopper’s cart.
  • Be respectful of other shoppers — space can get tight fast.
  • Follow staff instructions. They are there to help keep the experience safe and fair for everyone.

Pro Tips from the Bins Regulars

Bring gloves — especially if you plan to dig deep.
Inspect everything: Zippers, seams, stains — there are no returns, so look closely.
Wear comfy clothes and keep your personal items on you at all times.
End caps = gold mines: When people put stuff back, gems get left behind.
Be patient: Some of the best finds are missed by people rushing through.

Some shoppers bring collapsible carts or rolling bags to make it easier to carry heavier finds like shoes or housewares. If you plan on bringing your own bags, it’s smart to label them — just in case they get mixed up with someone else’s.
