Ready for your post Labor Day closet shakedown? We are! At Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries, our 15 retail locations thrive through donations from generous people just like you! Now with fall around the corner, it’s time to make some room and clear space for those essential chunky winter basics.

Reason #1 — Boston’s apartments are too small

You are probably living the reality that Boston’s apartments provide 13% less space than the national average, with a paltry 773 square feet on average. Ok, we can live with that, but what about bedrooms? Lately, nearly half of all new apartment builds are either studios or one-bedrooms. We know, multi-use, space-saving ideas abound, but seriously, it might be time to ditch that collection of flowery summer maxi dresses and save room for new mittens and scarves.

Reason #2 — Build new Goodwill habits

Add donating to Goodwill to your calendar’s to-do list this fall and begin to establish a worthy habit. Scheduling your donations around a change of season ensures out-of-date collections won’t linger past their loved date, and your home’s living space stays intentional and enjoyable.

Additionally, according to industry expert James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, tying donations to a date fits right into the best methods for building new, positive habits.

Do you know the abc’s of establishing a good habit? Here are Clear’s tips:

  1. Practice, rather than perfection, creates positive habits. So giving to Goodwill every season turns a good intention into a positive routine.
  2. Attach the new practice to an existing action — As we notice the weather changing, donating lightly used clothing and household items just feels right.
  3. Make the new habit easy. We have to ask, what is simpler than leaving a bag at one of Goodwill’s 27 drop-off locations?

Reason #3 — Generate jobs for Goodwill participants.

Now that we’ve convinced you to collect those barely tested tube-tops, distressed jeans, and Barbie-pink jackets and donate them to our creative class of thrifters who love last year’s satin full-length skirts, we’d like to express the best reason why supporting Goodwill is the right decision.

Goodwill’s mission is to help those with barriers to employment find and secure jobs through training, case management and individualized support. Those barriers to employment could include previous incarceration, a developmental disability, or limited job skills. Your donations make a difference the individuals we serve who are seeking employment and greater independence in their lives.

So this Labor Day, when your living space feels cramped and summer 2024 is in the rear view mirror, reach around and find a few things for us. We promise this small action will create bold changes in your life and enable a positive future for our participants.
