Martin Walter

BRING PHILANTHROPY HOME

From an early age, Martin Walter knew the value of helping others.

A refugee of war-torn England during World War II, Martin and his family came to the United States seeking shelter and safety. Following the war they returned home – the first of many international moves that also set the stage for his, and his wife Joan’s, future philanthropy.

After Martin and Joan met at McGill University as undergraduates, they traveled the globe as Martin helped build the Gillette brand. In 1978, the Walters settled in the US so their children could attend American schools. Martin took a global leadership role at New Balance and Joan founded the Parents’ Independent School Network.

“I have believed for a long time that if you have been helped, and if you are fortunate, you give back to others,” said Martin Walter.

His success led to Martin’s appointment as chair of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts’ (AIM) International Business Council, and his first introduction to Goodwill. Working alongside former Board member Peter Morrissey at AIM, Martin learned of Goodwill’s mission.

“At Goodwill, we know our support is going to meaningful purposes,” said Joan Walter. “It is about helping people who are seeking to better themselves and creating long lasting relationships in the community.”

“The Walters have made a profound and lasting impact on Goodwill and the individuals we serve,” said Joanne Hilferty, President and CEO of Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries. “We are thankful for their support, which has helped transform the lives of many who have faced barriers to work.”
