Mellon Academy for Girls
Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries’ Mellon Academy for
Girls encourages independence and self-sufficiency in girls
enrolled in the fourth through twelfth grades in and around
Boston. The Academy offers the girls after-school programming
(including structured homework assistance, mentoring, instruction
in technology and science and access to computers, and self-expression
forums), Saturday programming (focusing on college and career
preparation), and the opportunity to participate in Goodwill’s
Fresh Air Camp during the summer.

While many girls participate as campers, a number of older girls
are hired over an eight-week period as paid summer staff at the
camp, and thereby gain real work experience to prepare them for
specific jobs and careers. The three programming components of the
Academy are tailored to meet the academic needs and healthy development
of each girl. Activities and curricula are coordinated and appropriately
linked and offer safety, security and a stable environment for the
girls.
The After-School Program, which runs Monday through
Friday, 1:00 to 6:00 p.m., provides academic enrichment activities,
structured homework time, opportunities to work and learn on computers,
mentoring and self-expression forums.
An individual plan is prepared for each girl as she enters the Academy
to support and develop her knowledge and skills in challenging areas,
as identified in collaboration with teachers in the girl’s
host school. The After-School Program is a key training ground in
leadership for Peer Leaders and Leaders-in-Training. The program
has a student: teacher ratio of 8:1.
The Saturday Academy, held 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
on Saturdays, focuses on vocational and career opportunities, college
exploration and preparation. The program includes presentations
by volunteer professionals, visits to worksites of potential interest
to the girls, college tours, life management skills seminars, community
service activities, and cultural enrichment activities.
